The Power of a Peer Network

Posted By Jim Boomer, Wednesday, September 9, 2015

Keeping pace with the changing times can be difficult, especially if you don’t look outside your own organization for new ideas and best practices.  Joining a peer community can push you beyond the limits of your own organization and bring in fresh perspectives.  At times it can be frustrating when you learn you are lagging behind but it can also be very rewarding to learn your firm is on the right path, or even leading the pack.  After all, it’s what you don’t know you don’t know that costs you a lot of time and money.

Benefits of a Peer Community

There are a number of possible benefits when you step outside your own four walls and start networking with leading CPA firms from across the country.  Here are just a few we’ve witnessed over the last sixteen years of the Boomer Technology Circles.

  • Learn in a non-competitive environment
  • Get advice from peers that have experienced, or are experiencing, similar issues
  • Gain confidence your firm is making the correct technology decisions
  • Discover new ideas and avoid pitfalls
  • Access top experts and technology providers
  • Set goals, plan for success and be held accountable
  • Build trusted, personal and professional relationships
  • Benchmark firm performance against other leading firms based on financial and technology metrics
  • Strengthen alignment between IT and firm vision

Network Effects

A network effect (also called a network externality) exists when the value of a product becomes more valuable as the number of users of the product grows. A peer community like the Boomer Technology Circles displays positive network effects in that the more firms that are involved and participating, the greater the value to the overall group and its members. The infusion of new ideas, experiences and perspectives is important to making BTC members successful and future ready.

The Golden Ticket

During the 2015 Boomer Technology Circle Summit we challenged our entire membership to tap into their other professional networks and unleash the power of network effects to help grow their community. We called this challenge the “Golden Ticket” and unlike Willie Wonka, we aren’t requiring our members to rely on luck to receive their golden ticket.

We’ve granted each BTC member a virtual Golden Ticket.  Each ticket allows one person from a non-BTC firm to attend one of our fall meetings at no charge.  So if you’re a BTC member, consider this a reminder that you can help shape the direction your community grows by inviting an interested peer.  If you’re not yet a BTC member but you have a strong interest in our community and you know someone who is a member, ask them for their Golden Ticket so that you can experience a meeting without risk.  To redeem your Golden Ticket, visit
