In late 2015, the team at Boomer Consulting gathered for their annual strategic planning session in Kansas City. This is a time when we all look back at our accomplishments for the year behind us and to set our course for the year ahead. One of the strategies that bubbled to the top of our list was the desire to begin a philanthropic initiative. The truth is, we did not necessarily know what that initiative would look like or how it would manifest itself, but we collectively believed we wanted to get behind something that would express the generosity we felt for our ongoing success and the passion we felt for lifelong learning. Almost immediately, a contact we had in a peer group called “The Masterminds” came to us with a need, and the rest as they say, is history!
The mastermind is Steve Anderson, the founder, and the program is Eagle U. The original connection was made when Steve reached out to us in need of a financial literacy program to use as a currently missing part of the Eagle U curriculum. He knew about our connections to the accounting profession and felt we could help make an introduction for him. We facilitated the conversation between Eagle U and the AICPA Financial Literacy Program, and in particular the “Bank On It” game that was developed and launched in early 2016. Bank On It (http://www.startheregoplaces.com/students/games-tools/bank-on-it/) was created by students, for students. This interactive game challenges players on accounting fundamentals, gives the players a taste of real, working-world scenarios and reinforces what they learn in the classroom or real life. It will test the players with wisdom and ambition. Participants play the game on their phone, tablet or computer and it has a competitive component to allow individuals to play against each other. It was exactly what Eagle U was looking for.
Once this connection was solidified, we began to hear a calling for a deeper relationship with the program. We discovered that Eagle U is a 4-day success program where high school and college age young adults from all over the country get a 7-year jump-start on their future career and life. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from some of the country’s top mentors, speakers, and professionals. Each contributor to Eagle U is carefully chosen based on their own success and performance of the principles that they teach. We were intrigued and excited to do more. Given that it matched our desire to connect with an initiative that promoted lifelong learning and would provide opportunities for young adults, we made a decision to sponsor 4 young adults for the summer of 2016. The search began in March and today, we have 4 amazing individuals who will be attending Eagle U this summer.
We will be introducing these amazing youth to you at The Boomer Technology Circles Summit in August. Let me just give you a heads up – you will be very impressed, and after learning more about them, you will be very confident about the future!
