Retain Staff ... by Rewarding Them!
May 30 | by Sandra L. Wiley, COO and Senior Consultant
Firms across the country echo one common theme again and again – "How can we retain our current staff?" The question is a good one because firms certainly want to keep the talent pool they have, while increasing their level of productivity; however, they seem to be clueless as to how to achieve the goal. There have been many books written on the subject of retaining staff, however in this article we will look at one aspect only – Rewarding Staff. Why look at this one area rather than so many others? If firms would really stop to think and plan the rewards for their current staff, the firm would also be rewarded with lower turnover rates and higher productivity from the very people they have in their staffing pools today!

With tax season now behind us, Boomer Technology Circle season is now in full swing! So far Circles 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 have all met. Circles 4 and 8 will meet later this month. All the meetings in May were excellent, with a good mix of old and new members, timely agenda topics, and lots of great discussion. We are picking up some great success stories from Circle members and will be reporting these to you in the days ahead. Our move to the Marriott hotel in Kansas City has gone smoothly as well!
Great Partners make Great Firms
May 30 | by L. Gary Boomer, CPA, CITP, CEO
What does it take to rise to the position of partner in an accounting firm? While the criteria vary from firm to firm, I believe it is an interesting and generally difficult question for firms to answer. I have asked existing partners to list what they require in a new partner and they tend to come up with a list of skills and criteria for which many of them probably would not qualify. Most managing partners readily admit that too many partners were made partners for the wrong reasons over the past 20 years. The most common answer is: "we were afraid he or she would leave." Is this a good reason to make someone a partner? I believe it is not a valid reason and many firms are now paying the price in their inability to attract and retain quality people.
New California Identity Theft Regulation
May 30 | By Chad C. Coombs and Keenen Milner
IN RECENT YEARS, California has enacted a number of identity theft laws focusing on businesses and the need to protect consumer information at the source. Accordingly, business attorneys need to become familiar with this new legislation in order to protect their firms' client information and to guide clients through the new responsibilities that they face.
