Matthew Talley of Group 11 Advisors never expected to work in the accounting profession. He started his career as a banker after graduating from the entrepreneurship program at USC’s Marshall School of Business. But during the 2008 economic downturn, Talley noticed that “perfectly good businesses couldn’t get their finances in order internally. It was not a lot of fun trying to be a banker at that time.”

Recognizing that many small business owners need cost-effective accounting solutions to manage cash flow, obtain financing and grow their business, Talley addressed that need by starting Group 11 and partnered up with his father’s firm, Talley & Company.

His father, Andrew, had been a member of Boomer Consulting’s peer networks for years and recommended Talley join Boomer’s Business Transformation Circle. Talley attended his first meeting in 2012 and says, “I had no idea what to expect, but I got a lot out of it and was able to contribute to the group as well.”

Talley says, “Accountants, by their nature, are not very progressive when it comes to business.” He came to this realization when Group 11 needed to offload certain tasks to Talley & Company, such as depreciation schedules or tax preparation. The firm was still using some antiquated processes, like managing off of Excel spreadsheets.

Talley began bringing ideas and resources back from the Advisor Circle and implementing them in Group 11. Soon, he was able to keep more work on his side of the business instead of relinquishing that revenue to other departments. The tax and audit departments took notice, and soon Group 11 was the unofficial testing ground for new firm initiatives. Now, Group 11 works out the kinks before Talley & Company implements. Last year, their tax department had its most productive year ever because of the tools they’ve implemented.

Get to know Matt

Talley grew up in Huntington Beach and has been in Southern California most of his life. When he’s not working, he and his wife enjoy travel and golf, wine and whiskey, and local sports. He’s a fan of all of the local teams: the Lakers, Dodgers, and of course, his alma mater, USC’s Trojans.

If he could go back in time to give advice to his younger self at the start of his career, Talley says he’d say, “It’s never as easy as you think it will be. It never ha

ppens as fast as you think it will. You’ve just got to be patient.”
