From SEO to AEO: Is Your Firm Ready to Be the Answer?

There was a time when digital visibility meant one thing: ranking well on Google.

Firms invested in search engine optimization (SEO) to improve rankings, drive website traffic and generate leads. Those fundamentals still matter, but the way people search for information has changed, and so has what prospective clients expect from that search.

Nearly 68% of Google searches now end without a click, often because people are satisfied with the AI overviews Google provides. Business leaders now turn to AI tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Claude to ask questions, evaluate options, and research solutions. Instead of scrolling through search results, they get a direct answer, often synthesized from multiple trusted sources into a single response.

This changes how accounting firms establish expertise and credibility and how they compete for attention.  The real question firms need to answer is, "Would AI confidently recommend our firm?"

That question is the starting point for a new way of thinking about digital strategy: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).

From search results to trusted answers

Traditional SEO focused on helping search engines understand your website. Firms measured success by rankings, clicks and traffic. AEO builds on that foundation, but shifts the focus toward becoming a source AI references when answering questions.

SEO helps your firm get found. AEO helps your firm become the answer.

SEO isn’t going away. Strong websites, technical optimization and quality content are still essential. But they're now part of a broader strategy centered on authority, clarity and trust.

Why this matters for firm growth

Accounting firms sell expertise.

Clients aren't necessarily searching for the lowest-priced provider. They want advisors who understand their business, anticipate challenges and give them confidence in important decisions. AI tools attempt to answer those same questions on a prospective client’s behalf.

When someone asks, "Who are the leading firms helping manufacturers improve profitability?" or "What should I consider before implementing Client Advisory Services?" AI evaluates available information and identifies the sources that appear most knowledgeable, consistent and credible.

Your firm's digital presence now does double duty. It’s still a marketing asset, but it’s also part of how AI evaluates your expertise. That makes this a growth conversation for firm leaders, not just a marketing one. It’s easier for prospective clients and AI platforms to understand firms that communicate their expertise clearly.

The ANSWER framework

Rather than chasing every AI feature or algorithm update, firms build durable digital authority by getting a few fundamentals right. The ANSWER framework provides a practical roadmap for doing just that.

A — Align your messaging

Your website, partner bios, LinkedIn profiles, thought leadership, speaking engagements and recruiting pages all shape your firm’s reputation, but they rarely tell the same story.

Ask yourself: if an AI assistant reviewed every place your firm appears online, would it reach the same conclusion about who you serve and why clients choose you? When every channel reinforces the same message, your expertise becomes easier to understand and harder to overlook.

N — Narrow your positioning

"We provide tax, audit and advisory services” describes nearly every firm in the profession. Compare that to “We help multi-partner professional service firms build scalable financial operations through outsourced accounting and advisory services. The second statement gives people (and AI) a clear picture of exactly who you serve. Being known for something beats being available for everything.

S — Show your expertise

Firms earn expertise by consistently sharing valuable insight. Those that publish original research, speak at conferences and contribute to conversations across the profession build a body of knowledge that AI can reference when evaluating their credibility.

W — Write to answer questions

Prospective clients want answers, not service descriptions. Think about the questions your partners and managers field every week, like “When do we need a fractional CFO?” or “How should we prepare for succession?” Content that answers those questions directly positions your firm as a trusted advisor before the first conversation happens.

E — Evidence your claims

Case studies, client outcomes, awards, certifications and speaking engagements prove expertise instead of just asserting it. As AI draws on more sources of information, evidence carries more weight than language.

R — Refine continuously

The firms that benefit most from AI will continuously improve their content. They'll refresh outdated insights and expand what’s working as client questions and technology evolve. AEO requires an ongoing commitment to staying relevant, helpful and credible.

The real competitive advantage

The conversation around AI often focuses on technology. But the firms that gain the greatest advantage will communicate their expertise more effectively, not just adopt new tools faster. AI rewards clarity, consistency and demonstrated authority. Those have always been the traits of high-performing firms. Now, they shape how prospective clients discover your firm and how they perceive you once they find you.

Trust and visibility will drive the next generation of firm growth. As AI becomes a common starting point for business research, work to consistently educate, demonstrate expertise and clearly communicate your value so you can earn more recommendations and relationships. SEO helped you become discoverable. AEO challenges you to become indispensable.

In the years ahead, the firm that becomes the answer wins.
